Gutter Repairs & Replacement In Hounslow
Is rainwater going over the edge instead of down the pipe?
Gutters cleared, re-levelled, repaired or renewed - and followed all the way to the drain
Guttering is the roofing job everyone postpones because it isn't dramatic. Then one autumn the overflow starts stripe-staining the brickwork, next door mentions the waterfall over their side return, and by spring there's damp in the front bay. A gutter's whole career is moving roof water to a drain without touching your walls, and around Hounslow two things sabotage it: the borough's magnificent street trees, which fill gutters on a schedule, and a century of small movements - settlements, sagging brackets, DIY ladders - that quietly reverse the fall so water heads the wrong way. We put the system right end to end, from the highest joint to the gully at the bottom.

What you've noticed, and what it usually means
Every job starts with something a homeowner spotted. These are the ones Hounslow rings us about, matched to what our surveys tend to find behind them.
Water sheeting over the gutter edge in rain
Blockage or fall failure - leaves and moss have dammed the run, or the gutter has lost its slope and become a long thin pond. Either way the overflow lands at the base of your wall, which is precisely where you don't want a few hundred litres delivered per storm.
Green algae stripes down the brickwork
The tell-tale of a drip that's been running for months - a failed joint or a misaligned gutter, drip-feeding the same line of wall. Brick that stays wet grows algae first, then loses its face to frost, then lets damp through to the inside. The stripe is the early, cheap stage.
Drips from the middle of a gutter run between downpipes
Failed union joints on uPVC, or rust-through on the original cast iron that still hangs on many Victorian and Edwardian streets. Joints can be resealed and cast iron can be repaired more often than people think - full replacement is one option, not the default.
Damp low on an inside wall, worst in winter
Often the end of a chain that starts at the gutter: overflow soaks the wall, the wall soaks through, the skirting and plaster show it. Everyone inspects the damp course; meanwhile the actual fault is two storeys up, visible from the pavement in any decent shower.
Our way with guttering
The whole system, not just the trough
Gutters, downpipes, hoppers, and the gullies and drains they feed - a clear gutter into a blocked gully just relocates your flood. We check the water's entire route off your property before calling anything fixed.
Falls reset with a level
Re-levelling existing guttering is a genuine repair that costs a fraction of replacement, and it's the right fix for a big share of west London overflows. We reset brackets to a true fall rather than quoting new plastic on principle.
Cast iron kept where it belongs
The original ogee cast iron on Edwardian villas and conservation-street terraces can usually be repaired, resealed and repainted - and on those houses it should be. We'll price keeping it fairly against replacing it.
Sized for cloudbursts
Modern west London rain arrives in bursts that overwhelm undersized gutters even when clean. Where a run simply can't cope we'll say so and spec deeper-flow profiles - and where it can, we won't invent the problem.
Tree reality, planned for
Live under planes, limes or sycamores and your gutters have a maintenance schedule whether you acknowledge it or not. We'll advise on guards and cleaning frequency for your specific street rather than selling gadgets.
Fixed prices from the ground
Most gutter work quotes accurately from a ground and ladder inspection, so you get a fixed written figure fast - and cleaning jobs get done on the spot when you want them done.
The London plane tree versus your gutters
West London's streets are lined with some of the finest urban trees in Europe - the planes, limes and cherries that make Ealing's avenues and Twickenham's riverside what they are. Your gutters see the other side of the relationship. Planes shed big, slow-rotting leaves late into autumn plus a spring drop of seed balls and bark; limes add a sticky honeydew that glues everything into a compost mat. A gutter under mature street trees can go from clear to dammed in one season, which is faster than most cleaning schedules. That's the practical reason gutter maintenance around Hounslow, Isleworth and Ealing isn't the once-a-decade afterthought it might be in a treeless new estate - and why when we clear a run, we tell you honestly how long your particular street will give you before the next one.
"When we trace damp complaints around Hounslow back to their cause, guttering beats the actual roof surprisingly often - the £150 fix gets blamed on the £5,000 one all the time."

Four stages, zero surprises
Tell us what you've spotted
Phone or form, plain words. 'The gutter waterfalls at the corner' or 'there's a mark spreading on the landing ceiling' is all the technical detail we need to get started.
Free survey, roof and loft both
We look from outside at height and from inside where the evidence lives. Half an hour, no charge, no obligation - and if the roof turns out to be fine, that's the report you get.
Photos, diagnosis, fixed price
You see what we found before you hear what it costs. The quote is itemised - materials, labour, access on separate lines - and the figure on it is the figure on the invoice.
Repair, tidy-up, paperwork
The work done as specified, the site left clean, completion photos sent to your phone, and the ten year written guarantee handed over. Then you forget about your roof, which is the point.
Sometimes the survey says: leave it alone
Not every worried call needs a roofer. When the honest finding is that your roof is fine - or that the real fault costs £80, not £800 - that's exactly what the report says. Free bad-news-that-isn't is how a local firm earns the next ten years of recommendations.
The guarantee is a document, not a phrase
"All work guaranteed" costs nothing to say, which is why every van in west London says it. What matters is whether anything gets written down. Work arranged through Watertight Roof Repairs Hounslow comes with a 10 year workmanship guarantee as an actual piece of paper - dated, signed, specific to your job - handed over alongside the completion photos. Materials carry their manufacturers' own cover on top, which varies by product, so your paperwork names what applies to yours instead of waving at a number.
A guarantee that long is only affordable if the repairs don't come back - so it shapes how the work is done. Failed material comes off rather than getting covered over. Replacement tiles and slates go on with fixings specified for a roof that lives under the Heathrow approach, not the minimum the 1930s got away with. Junctions get lead. And anything we find that we can't fix that day gets photographed and said out loud, because surprises kept from you now become our problem within 10 years.
Plainly: if water gets back in through work we've done, we return and put it right at no cost, for a decade. Ask any firm quoting against us to match that in writing - it's an interesting conversation to watch.

Three questions that sort roofers fast
Ask these of anyone quoting for this work - including us. The firms worth hiring answer them happily; the rest change the subject.
Ask where the water goes after the downpipe
If a firm's survey stops at the shoe of the downpipe, the diagnosis is half done. Blocked gullies and broken drains undo perfect guttering daily. Anyone quoting you should be able to say where each pipe discharges and whether it's actually draining.
Ask why replacement beats repair - in your case
Re-levelling, resealing joints and replacing single lengths are all legitimate fixes. A firm that only sells full runs of new uPVC should be able to explain what's wrong with the cheaper options for your gutters specifically.
Ask what happens above the gutter
Overflow sometimes starts on the roof - slipped tiles dumping water past the gutter line, or felt at the eaves rotted so water tracks behind the gutter entirely. A gutter quote that never mentions the eaves detail may be solving the wrong problem.
uPVC versus cast iron and aluminium: what to hang on your house
For most homes modern uPVC is the sensible answer - but not for all, and west London has more of the exceptions than most places. Side by side:
| Comparison point | Modern uPVC | Cast iron / aluminium |
|---|---|---|
| Cost installed | The cheapest by a distance - most semis re-gutter for hundreds, not thousands. | Cast iron costs several times more; aluminium sits between the two. |
| Lifespan | 25-35 years; joints and clips age before the plastic does. | Cast iron runs a century with paint; aluminium 40+ years. |
| Maintenance | Cleaning only - no painting, ever. | Cast iron wants repainting roughly each decade; skip it and rust starts the clock. |
| Looks | Fine on interwar and modern houses; thin and shiny on a Victorian frontage. | The correct profile on period property - and on conservation streets, sometimes the required one. |
| Handling big rain | Deep-flow profiles available and worth speccing under large roofs. | Traditional ogee profiles carry generously - one reason the originals lasted. |
| Our steer | Default for the interwar semis that dominate this patch. | Keep or match it on Victorian, Edwardian and conservation-area frontages. |
Gutters and roofline age as a pair
Gutters hang off fascia boards, and when the fascia behind a sagging gutter turns out to be rotten, the gutter job becomes a roofline job. The sensible move is checking both before quoting either - if your gutters are misbehaving and your paintwork is peeling, read this next.
About fascias and soffits
What guttering costs around here
Gutter clearing around Hounslow is a modest fixed price per house; re-levelling and joint repairs sit in the low hundreds; full uPVC replacement on a typical semi in the mid hundreds to around a thousand depending on length and access. Cast iron restoration is priced per job. Every quote is fixed and written, and includes checking the gullies - because a clear gutter into a blocked drain is money half spent.

How often do gutters actually need cleaning around here?
Depends entirely on your trees. Under mature planes or limes - much of Ealing, Isleworth, Twickenham and the older Hounslow streets - once a year minimum, ideally after the late autumn drop. On open interwar streets with small ornamental trees, every two to three years often does. We'll give you a straight recommendation for your street when we see it, and we don't sell cleaning you don't need.
Are gutter guards worth fitting?
Sometimes. Good brush or mesh guards do slow the leaf build-up under heavy trees, but nothing eliminates cleaning - guards themselves need clearing, and cheap ones make blockages harder to remove. Under a big plane tree they extend the interval; they don't cancel the schedule. We fit them where they make sense and say so where they don't.
Can you repair cast iron gutters or is replacement inevitable?
Repairable, most of the time. Resealing joints, replacing single cracked lengths with matching profile, wire-brushing and repainting - a cast iron system that gets this treatment each decade or so effectively lasts forever, which is why it's still hanging on Edwardian houses across the borough. Replacement becomes the honest advice when rust has gone through the metal along whole runs, and we'll show you photos if that's what we find.
Why does the overflow only happen on one corner of the house?
Because that's where the fall fails or the water concentrates. Common culprits: a sagged bracket creating a low spot, a blocked outlet at that corner, two roof slopes feeding one undersized gutter at a valley, or a downpipe blocked at the bend. It's diagnosable in one visit, usually fixable in the same one - and much cheaper than the 'replace everything' answer it often gets elsewhere.
Do you clear the drains at the bottom too?
We check every gully as standard and clear surface blockages - leaves, silt, moss washed down from the roof - while we're there. A collapsed or deep-blocked drain is drain-company territory and we'll tell you straight if that's what you've got, rather than pouring your money into a gutter that was never the problem.

Where we do this work
Guttering across Hounslow and the boroughs that surround it - Isleworth, Brentford and Feltham on our doorstep, Twickenham and Richmond over the A316, Ealing to the north, and Hayes and Uxbridge out along the Hillingdon side.
What the patch says about us
Homeowners from Cranford to Hayes on how their jobs actually went.
"Woke up to tiles all over the front garden and not a breath of wind - couldn't work it out. They came the same morning, made it safe, and were the ones who told us it looked like vortex damage from the planes and that Heathrow has a scheme for exactly this. Helped us photograph everything properly for the claim. Could easily have just charged us for a repair and said nothing. That honesty is why I'm writing this."
"Our loft conversion started leaking around the dormer two winters after the conversion company vanished. Two roofers quoted big money to strip the whole dormer roof. These guys traced it to one badly-lapped flashing on the cheek, showed me the photo, fixed it in half a day. It's been through every storm since bone dry. The difference was they looked before they priced."
"Called them expecting to be told the roof needed doing - the house is 1936 and the ridge had been dropping mortar crumbs for a while. Survey verdict: re-bed the ridge, replace five tiles, and the rest is good for years yet. They even marked two tiles to keep an eye on. Quote was a fifth of what I'd braced for. When the roof does eventually need doing, they've earned that job."
"Water started coming through the back bedroom ceiling at 7am on a Sunday. Rang around - one lot quoted a £180 call-out before they'd even start. This firm answered, talked me through switching off the lights circuit and where to put the buckets, and was here by half nine. No weekend premium, made it dry, came back Tuesday and did the proper repair for a very fair price. Kept every promise they made on the phone."
"Had the fascias, soffits and gutters done on our terrace. What sold me was the survey - they pushed a screwdriver into the old boards to show me which were actually rotten and which were fine, then quoted to replace only what needed it. Other quotes were for capping over the lot, which they explained the problem with. Work was neat, gutters run properly for the first time in years, and the guarantee arrived as a proper document."
